Grants to British Columbia nonprofit organizations and school districts for programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for residents in eligible locations. Funding may be used to support initiatives in the areas of community health, affordable housing projects, environment, education, agriculture, the arts, culture and heritage, recreation, and community safety. Programs must benefit Salt Spring Island residents.

Foundation grants support well-defined projects that benefit residents of Salt Spring Island. As a basic guideline for grantmaking, the Foundation considers a balanced and broad view of community needs and potential opportunities.  Preference is given to grants that are well researched and that promote collaboration.

The Foundation grants can be used for:

  • Special projects or programs with specific outcomes and time frame
  • Pilot programs that could result in other income streams for ongoing operations
  • Capital equipment or furnishings
  • Capacity building for charitable organizations (i.e. board development, strategic planning, training)

Grant sizes vary and there is no maximum grant limit.

Term of Contract:

Grants are awarded for specific purposes and for projects covering a definite time period of a year, with the exception of multiple-year grants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:


a. The Salt Spring Island Foundation can only grant to registered charities and other qualified donees listed by the Canada Revenue Agency.

b. The Foundation may consider applications in which an intermediary arrangement has been made between a registered charity or other listed qualified donee and an organization that is not a qualified donee; however, there must be a direct affiliation of mandate and purpose. Additionally, the sponsoring organization must be willing to undertake financial and legal responsibility for the project.

c. Grants may be made to the school district for projects that enhance the educational experience for students and/or the community beyond the school system’s responsibility to provide essential services and core programming. The School District will be required to discern and put forth applications that reflect this

d. Organizations must demonstrate a strong and committed Board, financial transparency and solvency, effective management and the capacity to carry out the proposed initiative.

e. Projects must primarily benefit the residents of Salt Spring Island.

f. Pilot or demonstration projects must include provision for evaluation and a realistic plan for financial viability beyond the pilot stage.

The Foundation does not fund:

- Ongoing operating expenses, including fundraising costs
- Regular staff salaries
- Funds to cover budget deficits
- General fund drives
- Annual charitable appeals
- Directly awarded bursaries, scholarships, and awards
- Benefits to individuals
- Travel to and/or attendance at conferences, competitions, symposia or annual event
- Retroactive payment
- Activities of religious organizations that serve primarily their membership and/or direct religious purposes
- Political advocacy
- Fees for professional performers or guest artists

Pre-Application Information:

The opening of the Spring 2020 granting cycle will be announced in early February, with an application deadline of March 31, 2020.
