Fellowships providing a monthly stipend of $5,555 to USA, Canada, and International scholars holding a Ph.D. to carry out humanities research using a historic library collection in Washington, DC. Research should make use of the collection's manuscripts, rare books, and art from and about the early modern period.

For the 2019-2020 fellowship year, the Folger will offer semi-residential long-term fellowships. This award program is offered exclusively in this academic year and will allow for one semester of residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library and one semester of residence wherever the fellow might choose: at their home institution, or another archive, institute, library, museum, or research center, anywhere in the world.

The fellowship will support scholars with a monthly stipend of $5,555.55 for up to $50,000. Scholars who are awarded this special fellowship are expected to spend a minimum of four months in residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC.

To evaluate these applications, the Fellowships Program assembles an external committee of respected scholars, aiming for disciplinary, methodological, and geographical diversity. Committee membership changes annually. The committee is charged with evaluating applications based on the proposed topic’s impact, its relevance to the field, the originality and sophistication of the scholar’s approach, the feasibility of the scholar’s research objectives, and their expected use of Folger collections. Particular weight is accorded to the project’s impact, relevance, and approach.
