Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $7,000 to New Brunswick artists and other arts professionals for the development, research, and implementation of written, video, film, or multimedia projects that document the arts. Funding is intended to promote critical and theoretical discourse in the arts through original documentation and contextualization of arts activities, arts products, or art history. Preference will be given to projects that involve New Brunswick artists and artwork.

Eligible artistic disciplines include architecture, craft, dance, literary arts (including spoken word, storytelling, literary performance and literary translation), media arts, multidisciplinary arts, classical and non-classical music, theater, and visual arts. Eligible genres for all artistic disciplines include those whose intent and/or content places creativity, self-expression and/or experimentation above the current demands and format expectations of the mainstream industry, and has a significance beyond being solely a form of entertainment.

Eligible Expenses:
- Subsistence (living allowance) for the primary applicant only
- Execution Costs: Costs related to the realization of the project including costs for purchase of rights, research, production costs and distribution
- Transportation and accommodation for travel further than 150 kilometers from home.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Up to $7,000
- Subsistence: Up to $2,000 per month for the primary applicant
- Transportation includes fare for bus, plane or train; ground transportation such as taxis, tolls and parking; and freight or cargo expenses OR 40ยข per km traveled in a personal vehicle.
- Accommodation includes hotel costs OR $25 per night billeting allowance if the applicant is hosted by family, friends, or a host organization.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants are those who:
- Meet the definition of a professional critic or curator given below OR meet the professional artist criteria
- Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents;
- Have resided in New Brunswick for at least one year (12 months) prior to the application deadline;
- Have completed any projects previously funded under the Documentation program; and
- Do not have an overdue Final Report for any project funded by artsnb.

To meet the definition of a professional critic or curator, the applicant must have:
- Produced an independent body of work after specialized training;
- Written at least three critical texts or reviews that have been published in a professional context;
- Made at least one public presentation of their work in a professional context over a three-year period (curators only).

An individual may apply for funding for a collaborative project involving other participants. All collaborators must meet program eligibility criteria.

Submitting multiple applications for the same project from separate applicants is not permitted; only one application per project will be considered by the jury. If a grant is awarded, funds will be issued to the primary applicant only.

Projects must not be produced for the purpose of academic credit or as part of the applicant's work as an employee of a private or public organization or institution.

Pre-Application Information:

Deadlines are 11:59 PM on:
- April 1
- October 1

If either of these dates falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.

Letters of recommendation must be received within one week after the competition deadline. Applicants will be notified of the results by mail within three months following the deadline.

An applicant may submit only one application in the Documentation program per deadline. Projects must be scheduled to begin after the program deadline.
