Grants of up to $3,000 and grants of up to $5,000 to British Columbia artists in eligible locations for arts projects. Due to coronavirus (COVID-19), projects may take place remotely and must follow all current health guidelines. Funding is intended to provide early career artists with new, career-building opportunities. Projects must involve young people (ages 5-18). Eligible applicants must be emerging artists who are residents of the City of Vancouver or a member of the Musqueam, Squamish, or Tsleil-Waututh First Nations and live in that Nation’s unceded territories.

Creative Spark Vancouver enables emerging artists to gain experience on small projects that could lead to new career opportunities, new community relationships, different perspectives on arts and education, future learning opportunities and exciting multi-faceted projects. Creative Spark Vancouver supports emerging artists (of any age) to engage young people (ages 5-18) in arts-based projects. Grant funds are intended to cover artist fees, project materials and supplies, rentals and honoraria.

Before you apply, please make sure your application meets the Creative Spark Vancouver goals:

  • To build the capacity and confidence of emerging artists working with young people and art and culture-based learning;
  • To provide young people with opportunities to engage actively in art and culture, particularly artists and young people from equity-seeking communities; and
  • To critically engage with reconciliation, decolonization, equity, and accessibility.

Pre-Application Information:

ArtStarts has made some changes to the Creative Spark Vancouver grant so that they can still fund projects while operating safely in accordance with public health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. ArtStarts has changed the timeline for the grant, allowed for projects to happen via distance, and expanded eligible expenses to support projects happening online or via distance.

COVID-19 Updates:
- The deadline has been extended to May 26th to allow applicants more time to re-plan their projects to ensure they have a plan to deliver the project in line with current public health guidelines.
- Projects may take place online via video call, through package pickup with instructions for a low-tech distance workshop, online through a website, etc. Be creative! Find ways to deliver your content in a way that can still engage young people while planning ahead for uncertainty.
- Eligible expenses can include upgrades to your internet service, tech needs, etc. to make the project feasible online.
- Projects can receive retroactive funding if all artists involved already have BC Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check clearance. For projects that would have started in June or July you can start your project before you hear back about funding. Please note that Creative Spark Vancouver applications are not guaranteed to receive funding and you may not be successful in the grant process.
- Applicants must agree to adhere to the prevailing public health guidelines at the time their project starts. You MAY NOT plan a project to take place in person if the public health guidelines are still calling for social distancing or other measures. You MUST have a plan for both in-person delivery and delivery via distance, or plan to only do your project via distance.
