Grants to Alberta industry organizations, agencies, districts, associations, and groups for programs to prepare for agricultural emergencies. Applicants must contact the funding source prior to applying. Funding is intended to support programs in the following areas of focus: livestock health, plant health, irrigation conveyance, and food safety.

The purpose of the Emergency Preparedness Program is to improve the capacity and readiness of industry and regional authorities to prepare for and respond effectively to an Emergency that has the potential to:

  •  Negatively impact the health of people, livestock, and crops in Alberta,
  •  Cause significant economic losses for Alberta’s agriculture and food industry, and/or
  •  Threaten the infrastructure of Irrigation Conveyance Works in Alberta.

The Program provides financial support for the development of, or update to, an Emergency Preparedness Plan, including related training and education.

Estimated Size of Grant:

This Program provides grants on a cost-shared basis to cover Eligible Expenses for approved Projects up to a maximum of $100,000 per Project.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following entities are eligible to apply under this Program:
a) Industry Organizations;
b) Municipalities;
c) Irrigation Districts;
d) Registered associations representing Irrigation Districts, including the Alberta Irrigation Projects Association (AIPA) or other similar associations;
e) Registered associations representing groups of Irrigators who share access to and use of Irrigation Conveyance Works, and whose purpose is the development or improvement of these works;
f) Indian Bands; and
g) Métis Settlements.

The following entities are not eligible under this Program:
a) Government agencies;
b) Primary Agriculture Producers;
c) Post-secondary institutions;
d) Irrigators;
e) Research stations; and
f) Any other entity deemed ineligible by the Minister.

Activities that are ineligible under this Program include:
a) Activities associated with the response to or recovery from an Emergency;
b) Planning activities not directly associated with livestock health or welfare, crop and bee health, food safety, or the management and delivery of water through Irrigation Conveyance Works; and
c) Any other activity deemed by the Minister to be ineligible.
