Grants to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit and for-profit organizations to conduct research on the impact of sports betting on public health. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to submitting a full application. Research projects must be lead by a principal investigator who has a a PhD, MD or other terminal degree.

Projects should reflect the applicability of the cross-cultural considerations of the proposed research. Grants may focus on any geographical area. For the purpose of this RFA, sports betting encompasses bets on game or sports outcomes and scores, as well as fantasy sports and daily fantasy sports contests. 

Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prevalence of sports betting and related problems in the adult general population and subpopulations such as children and young adults
  • Identification of risk factors for gambling disorder among sports bettors
  • The impact of advertising and inducements on sports bettors
  • The efficacy of responsible gambling programs and policies targeted at sports bettors

Allowable Cost Items:

  • Personnel. Allowable personnel expenses include salary and applicable fringe benefits for the Principal Investigator, post-docs and graduate students (if they receive a salary) and other professional and technical staff.
  • Consultant Costs. Identify consultants by name and estimate the number of days of service and rate of compensation.
  • Equipment. Only equipment essential to the conduct of this project is allowed. Equipment is defined as items > $5,000 and having a useful life of more than two years.
  • Human subjects. Costs of recruitment (e.g., purchase of advertising), payments to subjects, patient care and other costs associated with the use of participants in the study.
  • Facilities & Administration costs. Up to 15 percent of the total direct costs.
  • Travel.

Estimated Size of Grant:

This funding mechanism offers $350,000 in direct costs plus 15% Facilities and Administration costs.

Term of Contract:

Projects may begin on June 1, 2020, and conclude no later than May 31, 2023.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

-Domestic or international public or private, non-profit or for-profit organizations are eligible to apply for NCRG funding. The Principal Investigator must have a PhD, MD or other terminal degree.

Funding will not be provided for the following:
-Administrative personnel
-Stipends
-Office equipment and furniture
-Tuition
-Dues and membership fees
-Maintenance/service contracts
-Construction, alteration, maintenance or rental of buildings or building space
-Recruiting/relocation expenses
-Entertainment/social expenses
-Pre-award costs
