Grants to Ontario qualified donees in eligible locations to support Coronavirus (COVID-19) relief efforts. Funding is intended to support local organizations providing services to vulnerable populations who are affected by the health crisis. Eligible applicants serve residents in Thunder Bay.

The United Way of Thunder Bay has partnered with the Thunder Bay Community Foundation to establish a COVID-19 Community Relief Fund. The fund provides emergency relief to front-line agencies and partners to help ensure that people’s basic needs are met during this unprecedented public health challenge.

This funding is intended to support frontline community service organizations providing services to support vulnerable Canadians, including low-income seniors, women, children and youth, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, refugees, Indigenous peoples, members of racialized communities, and more. 

Funds may be used for immediate needs and priorities related to the impact of COVID-19. This includes, but is not limited to, services such as:

  • Preparing and delivering meals and/or food hampers
  • Supporting individuals in accessing income supports and financial coaching
  • Providing home care or personal support for seniors, elders, and persons with disabilities
  • Mental health & wellness supports, including crisis counseling and peer support
  • Personal safety supports, including for those living in or escaping situations of violence
  • Access to safe transport for essential appointment and errands

United Way of Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay Community Foundation have not established a minimum or maximum grant amount. Grants will be issued based on the proposed services, associated amounts requested and overall demand.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Emergency Community Support Fund through United Way Centraide and Community Foundations of Canada will support qualified donees in running projects at the community level that serve vulnerable populations that have been especially affected by COVID-19.

Examples of qualified donees include:
- Registered charities;
- Registered Canadian amateur athletic associations;
- Registered Canadian municipalities;
- Registered municipal or public bodies performing a function of government in Canada.

Those ineligible to apply include:
- Individuals
- The Government of Canada (federal government);
- Provincial and territorial governments;
- The Crown; and
- The United Nations.

Pre-Application Information:

Applications will be accepted an ongoing basis through July 2020. All funding allocations will be made public on or before July 31, 2020.
