Grants of $1,000 to Ontario elementary and high schools in eligible areas for programs that promote healthy eating habits and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Funding is intended to support ongoing educational projects at home, school, and in local communities throughout the Province. Eligible activities include the preparation of healthy recipe cookbooks, school gardens, cooking workshops, meal planning and food shopping workshops, and classroom visits by nutrition professionals.
The goal of the Green Apple School Program is to encourage students and youth to adopt healthy eating habits and increase their fruits and vegetables consumption, which are the foundation of healthy eating habits. The issue of health, and more specifically of obesity, is taking on a broader scope in Canada, with both adults and children. Through grants awarded to Ontario schools, METRO hopes to demonstrate to young people that eating well is simple, enjoyable and tasty, and to encourage them to adopt healthy habits, which will stay with them all their lives.
Previous editions of the program have had a great impact, with hundreds of school gardens and healthy recipes cookbooks, thousands of culinary discoveries and workshops, and of course, thousands of hours of fun and learning.
Green Apple School Program projects must be focused on increasing the consumption of fruit and vegetable. In order for students to develop a taste and acceptance for different fruit and vegetable, they are encouraged to repeatedly taste, try, feel and discover. Therefore, projects must create regular and repeated opportunities to experience the joys of eating fruit and vegetable.
Projects can take place within the school property, at home, outside the school grounds, or within the local community. Projects must be approved by the school principal. In addition, projects must be viable over time, and do so without the continual support of the Green Apple School Program.
- Minimum six cooking workshops
- Minimum six tastings and discovery workshops
- Combination of both for a minimum of six
To help students understand the benefits of consuming fruit and vegetable, cooking workshops or tasting and discovery workshops must be educational. To that end, at least one of the following activities should be incorporated:
- Short blurbs written about fruit and vegetable, their health benefits, etc.
- Discussions, workshops, videos about fruit and vegetable
- Classroom visit from a nutritionist, chef, or another nutrition professional
- Workshops about meal planning, grocery shopping, etc.
- Planting of an exterior or interior fruit & vegetable garden
In addition, the following activities may be incorporated into projects:
- Tips and tricks may be shared with the parents to include more fruit and vegetable in snacks, lunch boxes, meals, etc.
- Ideas may be suggested for at-home challenges, or simple recipes to be cooked with the family, etc.
- Preparation of a recipe book that students can bring home.
- Prepare healthy lunches for students
- Get ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ by facilitating a cooking session for students to teach important tips on healthy alternatives.
- Publish a healthy recipe cookbook
- Design a healthy menu for the school cafeteria
- Organize a healthy recipe contest
- Create a posting campaign in the school on the benefits of healthy eating
- Organize a full day of activities oriented towards healthy eating

Grants worth $1,000 each will be awarded to selected applicants.
Projects must be completed by June 21, 2019.
To qualify, schools must comply with and meet all the following conditions:
- Must be a registered Ontario elementary or high school, public or private.
- Must have approval from school principal to set up the project and administer the funds.
As part of its corporate responsibility approach, METRO is committed to making a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates and sources its merchandise. To ensure that METRO invests in these specific communities, grants will be awarded to schools located within a radius of 30 km of a Metro or Food Basics store.
Anyone affiliated with the school (principal, teacher, professional advisors, nurses, etc.) can submit an idea with the principal’s approval.
Metro reserves the right to allow grants according to geographic representation across the province.
Eligibility criteria can be changed without prior notice.
Daycares and adult education courses are not permitted.
Applicants must submit their application by December 31, 2018. Applications must be received by the deadline date. Note that grants may be allocated by this time, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Projects will be analyzed on a first-come, first-serve basis and grants will be allocated if all the conditions are met.
Applications must be submitted online.
Any one school can receive a maximum of two grants during the school year for two different projects.
