Grants of up to $12,000 to British Columbia individual artists, nonprofit Indigenous arts organizations, First Nations, and collectives for traditionally based arts projects. Funding is intended to support activities that promote artistic, professional, and creative development in all disciplines and contribute to the vitality of traditionally based art practices and related knowledge. Priority will be given to projects that extend beyond one family and invite community participation.

Sharing Traditional Arts Across Generations is meant to:

  • Advance the work of Indigenous artists practicing traditional art forms in all disciplines
  • Increase training and participation of artists
  • Enhance traditional arts activities in all disciplines
  • Support the transfer of artistic knowledge and skills between generations
  • Enhance the network of artists practicing traditional art forms in all disciplines

To be eligible, projects must:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the development and practice of traditional arts and artists (this must be evident in their written mandate and previous activities)
  • Have a clear objective focused on sharing knowledge and skills related to a traditional art form in any discipline (visual arts, song and music, dance and story)
  • Demonstrate the input and direction of the senior artist/mentor(s) involved in the project
  • Bring together three or more people from more than one generation
  • Have a start date after the application deadline.

Eligible expenses include:

  • Artist/mentors’ short-term living expenses during the project
  • Artist/mentor fees
  • Mentor assistant’s fees
  • Costs associated with materials and supplies.

Grants for Sharing Traditional Arts Across Generations projects will not exceed $12,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications to this program will be accepted from:
- Registered not-for-profit Indigenous arts or culture organization in good standing, an active, unincorporated Indigenous arts collective, a First Nation, based in British Columbia, or an Indigenous artist who can demonstrate that their project will benefit at least two other artists

Please note: For the purposes of this program, the term “Indigenous artists” includes Indigenous status, non-status, Métis and/or Inuit.

To be eligible, the applicant must:
- Have an artistic mandate that demonstrates a commitment to artistic practice and demonstrates artistic excellence
- Demonstrate the support, participation, and direction of recognized Indigenous artists, cultural or community leaders
- Advance the work of recognized and knowledgeable Indigenous artists
- Present a realistic and balanced project budget, which clearly demonstrates financial need, and identifies other sources of revenue required to complete the project
- Indicate an achievable project timeline that works for the artist/mentor(s) involved
- Not have the same project funded through the BCAC support programs
- Unincorporated collectives must be directed by at least three Indigenous artists who have been residents of British Columbia for at least the past year
- Organizations, collectives, and societies MUST be First Nations or Indigenous directed (at least 51% of directors)

The following expenses are NOT eligible for funding through this program:
- Projects related to post-secondary education
- Capital and business development costs
- Equipment purchases, for example: camera, video camera, laptop, sewing machine, etc. Note: Equipment rentals are eligible
- Capital renovation costs; and expenses incurred in annual community celebrations
