Community Foundation of the South Okanagan (CFSOS) Similkameen

Deadline Date:

10/16/20 5:00 PM

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to British Columbia registered charities and municipalities for projects that benefit the residents of eligible locations. Funding is intended to support programming and capital projects. Eligible projects should address community needs, support collaborative efforts, improve organizational effectiveness, and plan for the continuation of the project beyond initial funding. Eligible applicants must serve the Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen.

Eligible uses of funds include:

  • Purchase or upgrade equipment or technology
  • Run a program
  • Renovation or repairs
  • Operating costs
  • Start-up costs
  • Research costs

Eligible uses of funds include the start-up of a new charity or project, wages associated with a specific program, bridge financing, capital costs, training costs, operating expenses like rent (under certain circumstances), and most other things. It’s important for applicants to understand that the Foundation wishes to invest in change, but change takes time. Grant funds should not be a revenue line item on an annual operating budget, but if applicants need an infusion of cash to get started (or stay afloat) then perhaps working together may be an option.

Estimated Total Program Funding:

$200,000

Estimated Size of Grant:

Projects requesting $1,000 or less qualify for a short-form application process.
Most of the grants probably average about $7,500, but this is not intentional or required.

Term of Contract:

Multi-year funding will not be available for the 2021 grant year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are made to registered charities and other qualified donees, including public agencies. Organizations that are not a registered charity may apply through a qualifying fiscal sponsor.

Grants may only be awarded to registered charities and qualified donees under the Income Tax Act (i.e. agencies in possession of a registered charitable number from the Canada Revenue Agency, including Municipalities). In exceptional cases, a grant may be made to an agency acting as a sponsor for an organization that is not registered but wishes to carry out a charitable activity.

Organizations must be located within the funding source's service area: http://www.rdos.bc.ca/index.php?id=7

Grants will not be awarded to:
- Capital deficits.
- Retroactive funding or for any project expenses to be incurred prior to the Foundation’s decision date.
- Annual fundraising campaigns, form letter requests or telephone campaigns.
the establishment or addition to endowment funds.
- Debt retirement, to provide reserves or for mortgage pay-downs.
- Funding sabbatical leaves or student exchanges.
- Projects whose primary purpose is to promote religious activities or beliefs.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Virtual Grant Writing & Information Workshop: Stay tuned for a date to be announced for September.

Pre-Application Information:

The application deadline is October 16th, 2020, by 5:00 PM.

Timeline:
- August 21, 2020: Application cycle begins
- October 16, 2020: Application cycle ends
- October - November 2020: Grant committee review
- End of November 2020: Board of Directors approves recommendations. Applicants are notified.
- Early January 2021: Grants payments available to successful applicants

2021 Grant awards will aim to be approved at the November 24th, 2020 board meeting but will be payble starting January of 2021, assuming the project is ready to receive the funds. Money is not released until the charity confirms they are ready to use the money. For example, if a project begins in March and the applicant won’t be spending money on it until June, it will be eligible to receive the money in June.

It is also wise to provide the Foundation with an initial “expression of interest” letter which briefly summarizes a charity’s intentions at the next granting cycle. Charities which have taken the time to communicate with the Foundation in advance of their application typically fair much better through the granting process. This is because on going communication is essential to ensuring that the Foundation fully understands the charity’s goals and objectives.
