Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $10,000 and grants of up to $50,000 to Nova Scotia nonprofit organizations, government agencies and First Nations for capital projects. Funding is intended to support projects that increase accessibility of public spaces for individuals with disabilities.

The Community ACCESS-Ability Program reflects the Government of Nova Scotia's commitment to persons with disabilities by providing equal opportunity and improved access to community facilities. 

Eligible Facilities Include

  • Community halls/meeting facilities
  • Libraries
  • Community parks or playgrounds
  • Community cultural/heritage facilities
  • Non-profit shelters/group homes
  • Sport & recreation facilities
  • Royal Canadian legions
  • Municipal buildings

Eligible types of projects include the following

  • Ramps, power door operators and lever door handles
  • Barrier free washrooms
  • Elevators and/or lifts
  • Audio signals and loops and lighting/color contrasting for visually impaired
  • Accessible portion of community playgrounds

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Tier 1 – Community Organizations: Up to 66.6% of eligible costs to a maximum $10,000 per project.
- Tier 2 – Convening Organizations/Community Collaborations: Up to 66.6% of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000 per project.

Term of Contract:

Organizations can receive funding for one project per year under the program. All projects must be completed by the end of the fiscal year, March 31st, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- Registered non-profit society/cooperative in good standing
- Federally incorporated non-profit organization
- Nova Scotian Mi’kmaw Band Councils
- Municipalities

New construction is not eligible for funding under this program. Additions to existing structures may be considered if they are designed to improve accessibility.

Expenditures for renovations and equipment incurred prior to April 1st, 2020 will not be eligible.

Ineligible Facilities Include
- Federally or provincially owned buildings
- Private homes/buildings
- Church sanctuaries
- For-profit facilities

Decisions may take up to 10 weeks.

The grants may cover up to two-thirds of the direct and indirect costs of renovations, installations, and/or equipment. The sponsoring organization must raise at least one-third of the funding from other sources. Organizations can receive funding for one project per year under the program.

- Tier 1 – Community Organizations: 100% funding in one payment with project approval.
- Tier 2 – Convening Organizations/Community Collaborations: Funding is provided in two payments: 80% with project approval, 20% when the project is completed, and the final report approved.
